Proceeds go to provide vision and hearing care for children whose families cannot otherwise provide them through the 1190 KEX Kids Fund and the Oregon City Lions Club. Now in its 4th year, the event got its start when local award winning blues and gospel singer Rae Gordon was turning 40 and chose to forgo a birthday party for what she called her “20/20″ and do a benefit instead that would have lasting results, long after any candle on a birthday cake was blown out. She was drawn to make the 1190 KEX Kids Fund the beneficiary after learning more about the fund when listening to their pledge drive and recognizing herself in the stories.
The charity with the help of radio and television personality Paul Linnman and his wife Vicki, provides eyeglasses and hearing aids to children of struggling families. As a child, she had problems keeping up in school due to hearing and vision issues. Her trouble seeing the blackboard and a family at home struggling financially kept her behind not only in academics, but in life. Now as an adult, enjoying a music career enhanced by both these senses, she knew all too well the importance of getting children help so they wouldn’t have to put off their own dreams. Word about the event and the cause spread quickly in the blues community and a caring fellowship of musicians and individuals with similar stories stepped up along with community and business leaders who volunteered to donate items, their hand and hearts.
In the 2nd year, it became a community offering when the Oregon City Lions Club became a partner. This chapter of dedicated community volunteers and leaders whose charity work is deeply ingrained with the Kids Fund and who had attended the event has made the 20/20 an annual event that brings warmth to January and most importantly, the help so desperately needed for children to thrive.
The Oregon City Lions Club are dedicated to building community, serving others, and having a lot of fun in the process. They are all local business owners, family members and neighbors who meet to do service projects, help raise funds for those in need, and generally support each other as they strive to make our wonderful and historic city an even better place to live! The 20/20 is their signature event and helps them continue to provide for their service projects.
